Brad Messer

Who did we interview?

Brad Messer is a leader in technology, with a background in artificial intelligence. He spent eight years with big technology companies before starting his own business. Brad regularly revise his skills to support the community by establishing novel businesses & partnering with key industry resources to see ideas through to fruition. His work is all about using technology to make a positive impact, showing how innovation can benefit everyone.

Let us quickly get to our expert's point of view.

  • Ques 1 : What project or research in AI have you found most fulfilling in your career? If you can share a case study.

Ans 1 : During my last two years at IBM, I worked on the IBM Telum which came with several challenges as the team began to work from home. Working through custom hardware, firmware, compilers, and application level code to debug any issues that were going on in z/OS Unix, z/OS Container Extensions (zCX, essentially a Linux VM running directly on z/OS itself), and then Linux on z proper was a challenging time, but quite worth it.

  • Ques 2 : What are the most promising AI technologies or algorithms that are currently being developed?

Ans 2 : A few thoughts from what I’ve seen coming through:

    1. Large Vision Models - Large Vision Models are to Computer Vision what Large Language Models are to Natural Language Processing. Especially with the multimodal collapse into a single model, we’re beginning to see much faster progress than we could have seen before.
    2. Domain-specific models - There’s an art and science to how big these models should be use case to use case and models that get too big tend to put those businesses out of business. Places like Sakana AI are breaking big models into constituent parts and working them together in a better fashion than we have with current tech.
    3. Continuous innovation in AI acceleration - There’s a lot of work that can be done in AI acceleration especially since we only focus on the most primitive operations possible like matrix multiplication instead of being free to think at higher levels of abstraction like a model block for instance.

  • Ques 3 : How do you see emerging technologies like AI and machine learning impacting data analytics?

Ans 3 : I see data analysts and data scientists engaging with the chatbots to move faster through their work as well as using existing or newly planned technologies to provide previously undetermined information and make it available for the analytics process.

  • Ques 4 : In your experience, how has the research and development landscape in AI and cloud computing changed over time?

Ans 4 : In the past, it was all about learning specialized systems and implementing them into a jigsaw deployment. Today’s tools are allowing us to be more straightforward with the deployment concerns and rely on fewer tools when reasonable as multimodal collapse in larger models provides one-stop shopping for streamlined, yet not necessarily easier, deployments.

  • Ques 5 : Quantum computing is a topic of growing interest. How do you see quantum computing intersecting with AI, and what potential breakthroughs could it bring to the field?

Ans 5 : It’s definitely an area of interest as there are some existing companies focusing on the area. One of the biggest troubles currently is finding out which use cases quantum computing itself is useful on, let alone quantum ML. I have seen it useful in drug discovery, heard of some applications in navigation for quickly split testing different recommended routes, databases for quick discovery of key records, and more.

  • Ques 6 : What are some key resources, books, courses, YouTube channels, or communities that you recommend for individuals looking to stay updated and engaged in the field of AI?

Ans 6 : There’s a lot to subscribe to and here’s some of what I rely on:

    1. Deeplearning.ai - Founded by Andrew Ng, It offers a weekly newsletter on top of incredibly rigorous online classes. It's one of the best places I’ve found.
    2. Ahead of AI - Published by Sebastian Raschka, PhD (https://www.linkedin.com/in/sebastianraschka/), this offers a comprehensive view into the latest research material and how it can be applicable to your current work. One can subscribe at .
    3. This Week in Machine Learning & Artificial Intelligence (TWIML AI) - A well-established podcast that partners with key industry leaders across academia and industry to give you the latest of what’s happening in this dynamic world.

  • Ques 7 : What’s your success mantra?

Ans 7 : Keep innovating with a humanistic touch. This world has enough challenges going on and we all need to pair together if we’re going to get through it. Innovative business concepts seem like the best way to get there.

This integration will revolutionize sectors such as education, healthcare, and work, allowing for personalized experiences powered by AI and the metaverse. This transformation will not only enhance efficiency but also contribute to reducing carbon footprints and enabling remote collaboration. However, it is crucial to be mindful of the potential risks and downsides associated with technology, particularly when it falls into the wrong hands.
