We all use fonts daily. There are several fonts online which can be used to make the content relevant. All the letters in the fonts fall in 2 categories – Capital & Small letters.
These letters are categorised as:
Upper case — For capital letters (ABCDEF)
Lower case — For small letters (abcdef)
Upper case letters were also called ‘majuscule’ and lower case as ‘miniscule’.
But why is it called a “Letter case” ?
That is because it has a physical value to it.
When printing press were starting over the world (they started in Germany for English letters) they used to arrange the letters in a wooden case, so that’s why they named it letter case – i.e. a case containing the letters.
A wooden case with Capital letters, it was kept in the top drawer, that’s why they named it- Upper case.
Small letters were kept in a drawer (case) under the one with Capital letters, so they named it Lower case letters.
In the wooden drawers, capital letters were kept in a case which was situated above the ones in small letters. So, they named the Capital letters as Uppercase and Small letters as Lowercase.
Uppercase — Note that they are all of the same height.
Lowercase — Note that they can be of different heights.
